Mike Nichols began his newspaper career in 1987 at the Elgin Daily Courier-News outside Chicago. He also worked as a full-time freelancer in the DuPage County Bureau of the Chicago Tribune before joining the old Milwaukee Journal in 1990. After stints covering Wisconsin’s federal courts and Milwaukee City Hall and working as a special projects reporter, he was named a columnist for the Journal Sentinel in 1998.

Among his awards: Milwaukee Press Club Award for Best General Column in the State of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Press Club First Place Award for Best Investigative Reporting in the State of Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee Press Club First Place Award for Best Series or Ongoing Coverage of Any Issue by a Reporter in the State of Wisconsin.

A graduate of Boston College and the University of Chicago, Mike is the author of The Waking, a novel published by HarperCollins, as well as Just a Few Sleeps Away — a 2011 non-fiction work about the aftermath of 9/11.  (www.justafewsleepsaway.com )   He is also a senior fellow at the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute and a regular panelist on “Sunday Insight with Charlie Sykes.”
